Fuck yeah, indeed. Avatar is a great film to look at, and it contains pertinent underlying themes. However, Avatar oversimplifies war. Cameron's film wasted a golden opportunity to discuss war and its politics allegorically and poetically. Both Hurt Locker and Inglourious Basterds, on the other hand, spoke to hawks, doves, and everyone in-between. Locker and Basterds treated the military more fairly (even the German military) than Cameron. At the same time, both films presented bravely problemization of the U.S. military's image and mission. I felt that Bigelow and Tarantino made more intelligent artistic statements than Avatar. And, they displayed equally grand stylistics to Cameron's masterpiece.
James, you show a man betraying his fellow Marines and, thus, getting his Marine brothers killed. Then, you say little on such a provocative plot maneuver. WTF, son? Don't tread on us. Quentin and Kathryn, you present proud U.S. Army soldiers as the heroes and angels that they are. But, you have the guts to likewise present war as the insanity, hell, and confusion that it is. By doing both, your fable and your historical fiction present humanity's most inconceivable occurrence for what it is. Or, at least, you come closer than other cinematic literature. Semper Fi, Mr. Tarantino and Ms. Bigelow.
